Cure as co-construction – mutual regulation in the psychotherapeutic process
Abstract
The main thesis of this paper is that the therapeutic process involves change in both participants. In part this is due to the inevitable mutual regulation and does not demand unusual therapeutic skills. Deep therapeutic processes can, however, lead to a degree ofinvolvement in which the basic organizing principles governing therapists' view of themselves, others and the world may be profoundly questioned. As a result, a partial reorganization of the therapist's organizing principles may be necessary. It is my contention, that therapy will not have a lasting effect unless we understand the inevitability and depth of our involvement in the intersubjective field. In order to facilitate change in our patients, we have to allow ourselves to be changed. In this sense not only the therapy, but also the cure is a co-construction, or co-creation.Keywords
Subjectivity, mutual regulation, intersubjectivity, cure as co-creation.
