Psychotherapy and salutogenesis: thoughts on a bridging in theory and practice
Abstract
Psychotherapy and salutogenesis lack a theoretical and praxeological connection. The author draws a conception which is bridging this gap. Long-term health is conceptualized as the result of a positive energetic-dynamic balance between health-promoting internal and external factors on the one hand and health-endangering internal and external factors on the other hand (internal and external resources, internal and external stress). Psychotherapy aiming to foster salutogenesis needs to change the mental functioning of the individual person in order to optimize the balance between those factors in favor of the health-enhancing processes. The author also is pleading for the study and change of social pathogenetic and salutogenetic factors and a strong engagement of the psychotherapists for health promotion, stress prevention, and social and cultural change. Keywords:
