Abstract

Emotions play an important role in psychopathology as well as in psychotherapeutic processes. Contemporary life style concerning emotions is analyzed. It follows a description of emotions as phenomena, trying to base these on neurobiological grounds. Cerebral structures and functional systems involved in emotional processes are described. In the second part of this paper the question about the relevance of these findings for psychotherapeutic work is discussed. Emotions are shown to mediate between internal or external stimuli and behaviour. Finally some emotion-oriented body-psychotherapeutic techniques are presented. Indications and contraindications for intensity-enhancing or intensity-reducing techniques are discussed.
