Abstract

Following some preliminary remarks on the basic assumptions of process research in psychotherapy, a new method for the analysis of client-therapist-interaction will be presented. This method, called “Sequential Plan Analysis”, encodes the dynamic activation patterns of interactional plans within the communicative process of client and therapist. The Sequential Plan Analysis allows for a high frequency encoding of the client-therapist-interaction (time unit: 10 seconds). Some results of a single case study (complete coding of a solution oriented brief therapy) are illustrating the kind of analysis and therapy description, which can be done by the method. In part II of this article, we will offer a perspective on the application of chaos theory to time series data of plan activations. Keywords Psychotherapy process research, client-therapist-interaction, Sequential Plan Analysis.
