For a scientific psychotherapy

Abstract

Does psychotherapy have a right to call itself a science, now that it seems to be so split upI In the present article the author proposes a number of criteria that should possibly be required for a psychotherapeutic model to be considered scientific. The model should have the ability to operate as a critical method and, more basically, to formulate theoretical proposals relative to the reality of psychotherapy; it should also enunciate specific rules concerning their validation. These rules need not necessarily be similar to those of theoretico-experimental methods and may vary from one model to the next. In this connection, the author stresses the need to reflect the ideas of “belief” and of “pre-assumption” that always influence the scientific construction of a psychotherapeutic model and its method of validation.

Keywords:
Epistemology, compared psychotherapy, scientific validation.
