Personal therapy and selfexperience in the training of psychotherapists
Abstract
The present paper is an introduction to a series of articles concerned with personal therapy and self-experience in different schools of psychotherapy (psychoanalysis, logotherapy and existential analysis, client-centered psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and systemic psychotherapy). It starts with an overview of the most important historical roots of the idea of self-experience in professional education of philosophy, theology and medicine and discusses the development of this educational element in psychotherapy. The second part deals with the most important arguments for an integration of self-experience into training (development of important psychotherapeutic skills and interpersonal competencies; empathic way of learning psychotherapy etc.) and discusses the two main reasons why science and scientific research should be interested in the field: theoretical and conceptual systematization and outcome evaluation. The articles are extended versions of papers presented at a conference held in Graz, Austria. Their publication should promote scientific interest and discussions in this field.
