Attitudes of psychotherapists towards professional co-operation. An exploratory study
Abstract
With the law for psychotherapeutic practice in 1990 psychotherapy entered the health-care system as a new profession. To provide a better and more efficient service politicians and professionals again and again made proposals for an enhancement of co-operation between the different professional groups in this system. On this background the present pilot study examines the opinions of psychotherapists towards cooperation with other professionals outside institutional settings. The study consists of two parts. In a first step seven experienced psychotherapists were interviewed about cooperation and the importance of this topic for their professional work. In a second step a 78-item questionnaire informed by the result of the interviews was administered to 79 psychotherapists in Austria. The result supports a multi-faceted concept of co-operation. The items are grouped according to certain domains and interpreted. An explorative factor analysis of the questionnaire indicates a provisional typology of therapists in regard to their attitudes towards professional co-operation.
