Client-centered supervision. The contribution of Carl Rogers

Abstract

Already in early times of client-centered therapy Rogers considered supervision as decisive and indispensable element in the training of therapists. However, his contributions to a distinct theory of supervision remained sparse, unsystematic and indirect. In this article the attempt is made to detect some contribution to a client-centered theory of supervision inspired by Rogers himself. The article shows that for Rogers supervision has four dimensions: a therapeutic, an exercise-oriented, an evaluative and a cognitive dimension. A case-specific vulnerability is a main source for learning in the supervisory process. In accordance with these dimensions the supervisor has to take the following functions: to be a therapist, a model, a feed-back-spender and an analyzer.
