The many faces of psychotherapy research
Abstract
Following a brief introduction and review of research on psychotherapy processes, outcomes, and process-outcome relations, this paper explores the gap that exists between psychotherapy practitioners and researchers. Dissension between practitioners and researchers is traced in part to misunderstandings that each has of the other’s work, and in part to basic differences in the nature and uses of practice-based knowledge and research-based knowledge. Changes in attitude and perspective are recommended to practitioners and researchers in order to facilitate mutually beneficial collaboration.
