Psychotherapy with cancer patients

Abstract

The remarkable progress in the medical treatment of cancer patients in the recent past has been accompanied by a psychotherapeutic care which is growing in importance.

The author describes the psychooncological program of the department for internal medicine at the University Clinic of Vienna’s General Hospital (Wiener Allgemeines Krankenhaus). This program is indicative of the growing importance of psychotherapeutic support for cancer patients.

An in depth case study serves as a basis for a discussion of the position of psychotherapy and its effects on patients, their relatives and the medical personal. Furthermore the author considers the prospects of and barriers to interdisciplinary cooperation.
