Comments about the treatment of severely traumatized patients - the psychoanalytic perspective

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to describe theoretically and practically the close connection of trauma and conflict, their repetition in the superego and in the destructivity directed against the self and others, and to present a few important aspects of treatment technique with such severely traumatized patients. The focus is mainly on the consequences of chronic traumatization in childhood, as manifested in the severe neuroses.

Leon Wurmser

Ausbildung als Psychiater in der Schweiz, als Psychoanalytiker in Baltimore, USA. Seit 40 Jahren in der intensiven psychoanalytischen und psychotherapeutischen Arbeit tätig, v.a. mit schwer kranken Patienten, wie solchen, die unter Persönlichkeitsstörungen, Drogensucht, Perversionen, masochistischen Beziehungswiederholungen und chronischen Depressionen leiden; dabei besondere Konzentration auf die Probleme mit Überichstörungen (archaische Schuld- und Schamproblematik, massive Selbstverurteilung, Konflikte innerhalb des Überich). Zugleich großes Interesse an der Erfassung unseres Innenlebens in der Literatur und in den schöpferischen Traditionen verschiedener Kulturen. Vollzeitig beschäftigt in der therapeutischen Praxis in Baltimore und Lehrtätigkeit, besonders in Europa.
