An Assessment of Students' and Graduates' Expectations and Motives Concerning the “Psychotherapeutisches Propadeutikum”
Abstract
This study looked at the characteristics of students' and postgraduates' motives concerning their participation in the Psychotherapeutic Propaedeutics training course. With respect to the data collection process the researchers designed a questionnaire to measure the participants' expectations and motives (Heller and Drexler, 2000). The questionnaire is based on the models of achievement motivation (Heckhausen, 1989), action control (Kuhl, 1983) as well as instrumentality (Vroom, 1964). It consists of 35 Items using a five-point rating scale and one open-end question. 68 students and 108 post-graduates filled in the questionnaire providing retrospective answers. 5 different expectations were extracted using factor analysis. The participants' pre-perceptions mirrored the theoretical assumptions. The factors refer to: the opening up of career chances and financial advantages, the acquisition of a certificate authorising the participant to work as a psycho-therapist, the promotion of their own personality development and self-orientation, being taught methods of how to influence others, gaining professional credit and acquiring additional qualifications by attending this course. The students and the postgraduates both scored lowest on the motives "professional career and financial affluence" and had their highest scores on the motives "higher professional (additional qualification) and personal credit (prestige)".
The groups differed definitely in relation to the motive "personality development and self-orientation". A more detailed analysis (e.g. differences in relation to the participants' educational background) is presented in the article.
