“Psychotherapeutisches Propädeutikum” at the University of Innsbruck - First Experiences and Outcomes of a Survey
Abstract
Since 1992 the University of Innsbruck offers the first part of psychotherapy training, the "Psychotherapeutisches Propädeutikum''. From March 1992 to July 2000 745 persons have participated, 313 have completed the course. 71,8 % of the participants are female. The average age at the beginning of the training is 31 years. 87% are Austrian citizens; 69% are active in or have completed other degree programmes at the University (eg. Psychology, Medicine, Education). 15 % have no secondary school leaving certificate.
Outcomes of a survey in which 118 graduates have participated are presented. 71% of the participants are working (full- or part-time) while attending the Propaedeutics Course. The graduates evaluate the usefulness of the course mainly positive, particularly for their "personality development''.
Only 48 % have applied for the second part of psychotherapy training, the method specific "Fachspezifikum". The main reasons they mention for not applying are the expenses and the time needed.
Most of the graduates continuing the psychotherapy training opted for Logo-Therapy and Existential Analysis, Systemic Family Therapy, Behavioural Therapy and Guided Affective Imagery. The deciding factors they mention are the method itself and the neighbourhood of the training institute.
Discussing the outcomes of the study the amount of female participants, the advanced age at the beginning, the length of time and the extent as well as the expenses of psychotherapy training were picked out as central themes.
