Psychomedia:?psychotherapy?and?psychotherapists in?the?mass?media
Abstract
The image of psychotherapy and psychotherapists has remarkably changed within the last decades. Its presentation is no longer limited to the niche of professional literature. The image gets more and more attention in different mass media. This attention has consequences. This article adds a new impression which is related to the spacial, contentual and temporal dimensions as well as to commercialisation of psychotherapy. I address the spacial difference of the public and private spheres and the herewith connected change of identity in the information society. The temporal dimension relates to the public awareness of the important difference of event and process. Finally I point out the importance of public attention as social capital, which is increasingly accumulated by psychotherapists. Keywords Media; Public sphere; Private sphere; Identity; Event; Attention; Cultural capital: Reputation; Prominence
