Does THE Psychotherapy exist?

Abstract

This paper is a contribution to the scientific foundation of psychotherapy. First, the author underscores the role of theoretical and existential presuppositions in the scientific construction of all psychotherapeutic methods. He proposes a procedure to explicit them in order to have a better scientific exchange between psychotherapists. Secondly, he insists on the necessity of empirical psychotherapy research, but points out the limits of empirical psychology’s epistemology, which tends to impose a unique way of validation. Nicolas Duruz

Dr. Nicolas Duruz, professeur de psychologie aux Universités de Lausanne et Fribourg, est responsable de la formation postgrade au Centre d’Etude de la Famille (Département Universitaire de Psychiatrie Adulte), a Prilly/ Lausanne. Il a une double formation de psychothérapeute: psychanalytique et systémique. Des études de philosophie, un séjour prolongé aux USA et un engagement dans la politique professionnelle, l’ont amené a un domaine particulier de recherche: les enjeux cliniques de la psychothérapie, interrogés d’un point de vue socio-anthropologique et épistémologique.
