Description of an anxiety clinic in Sydney, Australia

Abstract

The development of an anxiety clinic in a socially underprivileged district of Sydney is described. The rational for the developments of anxiety clinics in general, and for their treatment process in particular, is presented. The Clinic for Anxiety and Traumatic Stress in Banksto^n, Sydney, Australia sees its most important function in efficient diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders. At a time of global cuts and savings in the mental health system it is vital for psychologists, as well as other mental health professionals, to think ethically as well as cost-efficiently, and therefore find ways to offer the most efficient treatment to the highest number of patients.

Author Biographies

Renate Wagner

Dr. Renate Wagner ist klinische Psychologin und Leiterin der Angstklinik im Bankstown Hospital und hat einen Lehrauftrag an der Medizinischen Fakultät der University of New South Wales. Sie erwarb ihr Doktorat an der Universität Wien und ihre weitere klinische Ausbildung in kognitiver Verhaltenstherapie und in Familientherapie in London. Sie lebt seit 1974 in Australien, wo sie sowohl klinisch als auch akademisch tätig ist. Sie lehrte viele Jahre medizinische Psychologie an der Medizinischen Fakultät der University of New South Wales in Sydney und später klinische und Beratungspsychologie an derselben Universität. Dr. Wagner war 1995 Gastprofessorin am Institut für Medizinische Psychologie der Universität Wien. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte sind: der Beitrag psychologischer Faktoren in der optimalen medizinischen Ausbildung und Pflege (Arzt-Patient-Beziehung, Burnout, transkulturelle Arzt-Patient-Beziehungen), Angststörungen mit speziellem Schwerpunkt auf kulturelle Aspekte in der Diagnose und Behandlung von Angststörungen. Dr. Wagner ist verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder.

Vijaya Manicavasagar

Vijaya Manicavasagar ist klinische Psychologin (Magister der klinischen Psychologie). Sie ist die Leiterin der Angstklinik in Liverpool, New South Wales, und Forschungsleiterin der psychiatrischen Forschungs- und Lehrabteilung des Psychiatrischen Institutes der University of New South Wales. Magister Manicavasagar war in die Entstehung von zwei Angstkliniken in zwei der größten Universitätskliniken in Sydney involviert. Sie hat 10-jährige Erfahrung mit Gruppenbehandlung für Patienten mit Angststörungen. Sie ist die Autorin eines Behandlungsbuches und eines Selbsthilfebuches für Patienten mit Angststörungen, und viele ihrer Publikationen beziehen sich auf Angststörungen und sind in wissenschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften zu finden.
