Psychodynamic psychiatry in the hospital

Abstract

At the symposium in honour of the 70th birthday of Prof. S. Mentzos, a report was given on various aspects of a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of patients suffering from psychologically determined early disorders. It can be shown that it is ultimately an attitude of a “good enough ” mother that will promote the retarded psychological maturation process. A therapeutic approach amalgamating elements of self-psychology with the concept of Mentzos’ conflict model has proved to be most successful in therapy. The therapeutic procedure is demonstrated by means of an individual case. Unfortunately, the stipulations imposed by the current reconstructing of the German public health system, implying shortages in personnel and cuts in the duration of treatment, raise severe obstacles for the application of psychodynamic psychiatry.

Theo Piegler

Dr. Theo Piegler, Arzt für Psychiatrie, Psychotherapie, Neurologie und Psychotherapeutische Medizin ist seit 1988 als Chefarzt der Abteilung für Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie des Bethesda - Allgemeines Krankenhaus gGmbH in Hamburg-Bergedorf tätig. Sein Interesse gilt der psychodynamischen Psychiatrie. Hierzu gibt es von ihm eine Reihe einschlägiger Publikationen. Er ist Mitbegründer der norddeutschen Arbeitsgemeinschaft für psychodynamische Psychiatrie (NAPP) und Dozent der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für integrative Psychoanalyse, Psychotherapie und Psychosomatik Hamburg e. V. (APH).
