Abstract

The LAC-study is probably the first controlled psychotherapy study comparing the results of psychoanalytic and cognitive-behavioral long-term psychotherapy in chronically depressed patients with randomized and preferred assignment. Both psychotherapy methods proved to be successful. The effect sizes and complete remission rates were higher than in other studies. In future work, mediator and moderator variables will be investigated to describe which therapeutic factors led to which effects in which of the two methods. This article briefly outlines the findings of the LAC-study, which have meanwhile been published in detail, and the methodological approach.
