Abstract

AI is impacting on all aspects of our lives at an exponential rate. Concerns have been raised about the impact of certain AI online social media applications available to young people. Adolescents, as a group, are very active online especially on social media which they use amongst others, as a vehicle for exploring their sense of identity. This has the potential to lead to emotional difficulties especially in vulnerable adolescents. In addition, they are then using online apps for counselling support which is problematic. The scope of this paper is narrow focusing on social media use in relationship to identity exploration and consolidation. There are other important issues relating to adolescents online activities which is outside the scope of this paper.
