Freedom as tragic gift – the workless people from marienthal – a reminiscence

Abstract

The scientific research “the unemployment people from Marienthal” is the first empirical-qualitative study about unemployment people. The study mirrors the principals of action research. This is in two aspects important for the actual discussion. On the one hand the study mirrors the integration of quantitative and qualitative tools. On the other hand it explains and underlines the importance of the experience and the emotional state of poverty. In contrast to the opinion that poverty leads to political protest and political action, the study shows that people resign and get apathic.
